Congratulations to all of the teams who made change in the community by participating in the 2012 hundred dollar project. More than 1,500 qualified votes were received and the results are in:

1st place: Central Valley HS Technology Student Association ($2,500)

Central Valley High School’s Technology Student Association held a stuffed animal drive at their home basketball games, asking attendees to toss their animals into containers on the court during half-time. Over 1,000 stuffed animals were collected and donated to Catholic Charities’ Christmas Bureau, with the intent of bringing joy during the holiday season to those in the community who are less fortunate.

2nd place: Sandpoint Interact ($1,500)

Sandpoint’s Winter Carnival was the perfect opportunity for Team Sandpoint Interact to sell hot cocoa and snacks, raising money to purchase basic school supplies for students in Ecuador. The event is well-known and attracts both local community members and tourists. They used the hundred dollars to help offset the cost of purchasing the beverages and snacks.

3rd place: Simply Nutritious ($1,000)

Utilizing educational, hands-on presentations, this team shared the financial and health benefits of simple nutrition with their community in Ephrata, Washington. They shared tasty food samples, take-home recipes, menu ideas, and budget-friendly options to help people eat better.

4th place: Inspire

These students at West Valley High School in Spokane, Washington created a clothing store that provides apparel to low-income families. They partnered with Plato’s Closet to provide some of the clothing but needed more support, and raised about $550 through the hundred dollar project. A new initiative, tumblers, which are colored by children at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Spokane, will be sold at the school to raise money for the kids.

5th place: Where There’s a Well, There’s a Way

Inspired by her teacher at Central Valley High School, Sarah Matlack wants to build a well in Buwambo, Uganda to provide water for its residents. She’s gathered a team of students and partnered with Hope for Kids International to organize fundraising events which will cover the costs ($10,150) to dig the well. They sold water during lunch at CVHS and also put on a Zumba event.

6th place: Fleece

Kira’s Closet was started in Odessa, Washington when the school librarian’s daughter, Kira, passed away suddenly from a brain tumor. The closet distributes clothing and other much-needed items to children in the area. Team Fleece purchased low-cost fleece to make blankets and donated them to Kira’s Closet.
